ETUC hands over workers’ call for information, consultation & participation to EU Commissioner Schmit

Workers mobilisation

Workers all over Europe mobilised for the adoption of the European Parliament report on information, consultation & participation. Hundreds of pictures of workers with our megaphone for information, consultation and participation were taken and shared over social media. The ETUC has gathered all of the pictures in a huge poster with our call for a framework directive on information, consultation & participation.

ETUC Confederal Secretary Isabelle Schmit & MEP Gaby Bischoff (S&D) handed over the poster to Schmit in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Bischoff reiterated: “Workers call for more than what the Commission has replied to our report. We need a ICP framework to strengthen democracy!”

Isabelle Schömann reiterated the call: "Workers' participation must be strengthened in EU law. We need more democracy at work  in view of the future twin transitions.”

EU Commissioner Schmit underlined his support for More Democracy at Work: “It’s high time now in the 21st century to also democratize our economy. I’m convinced that we need more democracy at work and I will do my best to push this into the right direction during the next 2 years of my mandate. If not earlier, the topic has to be in the next Commission’s work programme.“

With regards to the different systems of Democracy at Work in Europe, he said: “It cannot be possible that EU legislation gives loopholes to circumvent national democracy at work.”

Background

Last year in December the European Parliament adopted a report to call for a framework on information, consultation & participation. The report was adopted by a large majority and backed the ETUC’s key demands on a framework Directive and a revision of the EWC Directive. However, the Commission’s reply to the EP report didn’t propose any legal framework.
