Democracy at work: European Parliament greenlights European Works Councils revision

The European Parliament has confirmed its backing of measures to enforce workers’ voice within multinational companies. The ETUC now urges Member States to confirm their support to the adoption of the revision of the European Works Council Directive.

The long-standing overdue revision ensures meaningful consultation, timely access to information, delivering concrete outcomes for a fair deal for workers, for social progress and upwards convergence.

As outlined in the last letter to Members of the European Parliament ahead of the vote, the revision delivers important improvements while at the same time simplifying procedures, providing greater predictability and does not imply any new costs for businesses which comply with the law.

Isabelle Schömann, ETUC Deputy General Secretary, said:

"This is good news, very good news for workers, for EWC members and for all economic actors in the internal market.

"The ETUC is well prepared to equip and empower EWC members on the basis of the revision with better tools and revamped energy!"
