The EU must ensure equal rights and equal treatment for migrants at work

Brussels, 17/12/2012 The ETUC underlines the need to consider migrants first of all as human beings, to whom equal human and social rights must be ensured to the same extent as European citizens, as well as the right to free and fair mobility and to equal treatment in the workplace. This is the only way to fight social dumping and the exploitation of migrants, and to achieve a balanced and fair labour market in Europe.

Two years overdue: time for the European Council to deliver on maternity leave directive !

Brussels, 28/11/2012 Pregnancy and maternity protection is essential for achieving gender equality and the protection of women’s rights. There is evidence that maternity related discrimination is still a significant problem and increasing due to the crisis. This is a reason why, the ETUC and the EWL believe that the proposals put forward for a revised Directive would make a positive difference to millions of women and their babies. Women’s participation in labour market is crucial to our economy and the recovery.

Brussels, 16/05/2012 As democratic representative organisations, trade unions play a special role in society and contribute effectively to the development of many aspects of society, including education. Trade unions should continue to be at the forefront in tackling any forms of discrimination, at the workplace and in all their actions and activities. Good practices have already been initiated at national level by many public authorities, civil society organisations and trade unions. Let’s share them and expand them!

ETUC Action Programme on Gender Equality

Brussels, 06-07/03/2012 Introduction The EU has made significant progress over the last 50 years in promoting greater equality between women and men in society and in the labour market. Since its foundation EU equal treatment legislation has contributed and will contribute to equal participation of women and men in Europe’s economy and society. With the new mandate for the period 2010-2014 the Commission adopted different EU instruments to deal with gender equality:

Trade Unions and disability movement: together for more inclusive labour market

Brussels, 14/03/2011 To avoid that social issues are not scarified to the imperatives of the economy, the organisations believe that it is necessary to develop a strong riposte. Meeting the target of 75% of employment rate by 2020 requires taking into account persons with disabilities, who represent 15% of the working population of the EU. The framework agreement for the inclusive labour markets, signed by the European social partners on 25 March 2010, resulted to be a key instrument to achieve the targets of the EU 2020 Strategy.

Equal treatment must apply to all

Brussels, 28/01/2011 In the chaotic proceedings of the European Parliament we are witnessing an attempt to adopt a Directive that could have serious consequences for the labour market and for European society. More specifically, whereas spokespersons claim to defend equal treatment, the Directive actually excludes certain groups of workers, namely: seasonal workers, workers posted from third countries, intra-group workers, and workers who arrive under a General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS).

European Migration policy must change course

Brussels, 07/12/2010 Joël Decaillon, ETUC Deputy General Secretary, stated: ‘These new proposed directives are bound to further fragment the labour market and facilitate social dumping in Europe. The directive for the single permit should be a framework law covering all rights for all workers without exception, guided by the principles of equality of treatment and non-discrimination’.
