The ETUC stands with the people of Greenland Statement adopted at the Extraordinary Executive Committee Meeting of 18 June 2025 In November 2024, the people of Greenland woke up to the disturbing news that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, had once again raised the idea of seizing control of their land. This was not the first time such a threat was issued by the President or his cabinet.

Mid-Term Conference  Belgrade Declaration Representing over 45 million working people in 41 countries across the continent, the European Trade Union Con­federation (ETUC) is the voice of workers in Europe. Meeting in Belgrade, Serbia, in May 2025, the leaders of trade unions from across Europe discussed the concerns and priorities of workers, their families and their communities.

Letter of solidarity of the ETUC towards Spanish people and trade unions following the tragic floods Dear brothers and sisters, The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) expresses our deepest condolences and our full solidarity to Spanish people and trade unions following the tragic floods in Spain. We join with Spanish trade unions in mourning the victims.  Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and loved ones and with the communities of the territories affected by this tragedy. 

Ensuring security: New impulse for peace needed  Adopted at the Executive Committee meeting of 24-25 June 2024. In line with its Constitution and with its Charter of Values, the ETUC recalls that peace is a precondition for the full exercise of human rights and stable democracy and that there is no peace and security without social justice.

Brussels 11 December 2023 To the Members of the European Council Dear Members of the European Council, I am contacting you to bring the message of workers and trade unions from across Europe in advance of our demonstration in Brussels tomorrow. The demonstration is a clear call to governments for a fair deal for workers in advance of the final negotiations on the reform of the economic governance rules.

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has appointed an independent company with specialist expertise in anti-corruption practices in response to allegations of corruption involving public figures in and around the European Parliament, which resulted in the questioning and release under conditions of the former General Secretary of the ETUC.

The ETUC read in the media about the questioning of its former General Secretary by the Belgian authorities.   The ETUC has no reason to believe that the investigation referred to in the media has any connection to the ETUC.   The searches of premises referred to in the media did not include ETUC premises. The ETUC will cooperate with the authorities.

ETUC is delighted to announce new Deputy General Secretary Claes-Mikael Ståhl, who started at ETUC today. Claes-Mikael is Swedish and has worked for Swedish blue-collar union LO since 2007, primarily on collective bargaining.   He has EU experience having worked in Brussels from 2003 to 2006, first for the EU Office of the Swedish Trade Unions and then for the ETUC. He has just moved to Brussels with his wife and two children.

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has elected Katja Lehto-Komulainen as its Deputy General Secretary, replacing Veronica Nilsson who is standing down for family reasons. Katja Lehto-Komulainen is Finnish, has long experience of working at the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) and was Head of International Affairs.

As the economic landscape is deteriorating fast with the crisis hitting countries worldwide, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has established a specific section focusing on the economic and social crisis. It highlights the early warnings that the European trade union movement has issued regarding the risks inherent to financial capitalism, as well as the positions and actions proposed by ETUC to prevent the recession from deepening further.

Claudia Menne obtained her Master’s degree in Social and Economic History from the University of Bochum, Germany, in 1990 and has gone on to hold numerous and reputable positions in this field. Most recently, in May 2011, Claudia was elected Confederal Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), set up in 1973 to promote the interests of working people at European level and to represent them in the EU institutions.

The ETUC was set up in 1973 and now comprises 94 national trade union confederations in 42 countries, plus 10 European trade union federations. Congress, Executive & Steering Committee Congress determines the organisation's general policy. It takes place every four years and is attended by delegates from national confederations and European trade union federations. It elects the members of the Executive Committee, the President, the General Secretary, the two Deputy General Secretaries and the three Confederal Secretaries.

The ETUC makes special arrangements to consult and represent the interests of young people and women, through its Youth Committee and Women’s Committee, the implementation of Equality Plans, and a policy of ‘mainstreaming’ gender equality into all ETUC decisions and activities. The ETUC also convenes the ITUCs Coordinating Committee, which comprises the Presidents of the ITUCs and contributes to formulating ETUC policies, especially those relating to the welfare of workers in border regions.
