May Day in Turkey: historic joint demonstration by Turkish trade unions at Taksim square in Istanbul

Brussels, 30/04/2010

For the first time in history, the Turkish trade unions affiliated with the ETUC – DISK, KESK, HAK-IS and TURK-IS – will hold a joint demonstration on May Day at Taksim Square in Istanbul. For the ETUC, this event marks a major step forward towards the recognition of fundamental and trade union rights in Turkey.
"Following on from the recognition of May Day as Workers' Day, with the adoption of a law last year, this authorisation to demonstrate together at Taksim Square is another step in the right direction. Indeed, this square is a highly symbolic place for trade union organisations. The ETUC welcomes this advance that enables Turkish trade unions to carry out a joint action in such an important location", declared ETUC General Secretary John Monks.
A delegation whose members include numerous representatives of European federations and trade unions will participate in this International Workers' Day demonstration.
