The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) calls for a Euro-demonstration on 21 June in Luxembourg City against austerity and the type of economic governance that the European Union wants to impose on workers across Europe.
Through this demonstration, the ETUC intends to show its opposition to the decisions concerning economic governance and the Euro Plus Pact which will be on the table of the European Council on 24 June. The Euro Plus Pact will be applicable to the Euro zone and six other economies (Bulgaria, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania). Its implications on pay, social security and the collective bargaining structure are serious.
In particular, this Pact includes recommendations to Member States on:
- comparisons of unit labour costs,
- hostility to wage indexation and more generally to centralised bargaining,
- linking pay to productivity irrespective of inflation,
- downward pressure on public sector pay and, in some cases, on minimum wages, also with consequences for the private sector,
- downward pressure on pension entitlements and early retirement schemes,
- promotion of strict budgetary and constitutional controls on public debt and expenditure.
The ETUC considers that this approach is totally unacceptable and is determined to oppose it.
The Euro-demonstration is organised in close cooperation between the ETUC and the two trade unions of Luxembourg (OGBL and LCGB and) affiliated to the ETUC.
