Europe must go 'further and faster' call by ETUC

Brussels, 25/02/2009

Mr Monks called for a second recovery plan of 2% of gross domestic product (GDP), including larger, sustainable projects financed by European Growth Bonds. Moreover, he called for a stimulation of demand and purchasing power as part of a New Social Deal for workers. He also urged to establish new traffic rules on mobility of labour, asking specifically for a new Social Progress Protocol and a stronger Posted Workers Directive to protect collective bargaining. Finally, he called for a tough EU response to reforming the financial system which has caused the wreckage of the world’s economy.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Monks said: ‘Europe is being tested like never before. It must rise to the challenge and it can do this by demonstrating that it is on the side of workers. A New Social Deal is imperative’.
