The ETUC welcomes the adoption of the report on Corporate Social Responsibility by the European Parliament

Brussels, 14/03/2007

The ETUC considers that this report brings the debate on CSR in Europe back onto the right track, recovering elements such as multilateralism, accountability and transparency, which seemed to be lost in the recent work of the Multistakeholder Forum.

ETUC Confederal Secretary Walter Cerfeda stressed that this vote in the European Parliament relaunches European workers' demands, in particular in calling for a mandatory framework for social reporting and for companies and managers to take responsibility for the consequences of abuses or misdemeanours.

It also opens a new direction for the future work of stakeholders in the Multistakeholder Forum. “Now we warmly invite the European Commission to act in accordance with the views coming from the European Parliament. The European Commission should be the motor for a brand new partnership in the framework of a Multistakeholder Forum with an enhanced agenda, in which social concerns find a new momentum,” declared Walter Cerfeda.
