ETUC General Secretary and Hungarian trade union leaders meet European Commissioner Andor to voice concerns over reform of the Hungarian labour code

Brussels, 12/09/2011

Bernadette Ségol made a point of reiterating the ETUC's commitment to trade union rights: "We are extremely concerned about the proposal for reform of the Hungarian labour code. The Hungarian government has presented a draft labour code that runs counter to European social rights, whether on trade union recognition, the protection of trade union representatives or protection of pregnant employees against dismissal. We fear that this type of initiative may gain ground. We had the opportunity to express these concerns, with our Hungarian affiliates, at our meeting with European Commissioner Lázló Andor. Our aim was to alert the European Commission that this proposal is a violation of fundamental European rights."
