ETUC deplores lack of progress on migration action by Ministers

The ETUC is dismayed that today’s Justice and Home Affairs Council will not approve the measures proposed by the European Commission to address the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean.

In view of the concern expressed by national governments at the emergency Council meeting only a few weeks ago, when the crisis was prominent in the media, it is worrying that the proposals put forward by the European Commission in the EU Agenda on Migration are now being pushed back.

The crisis in the Mediterranean is a European problem which requires a European solution. It is bitterly disappointing to see governments failing to come to a unified response,” said ETUC Confederal Secretary Luca Visentini.

The ETUC calls on the JHA Council to endorse the Commission’s migration plan with the urgency it requires.

The European Parliament has repeatedly, and with a large majority, called on Member States to act at once, in a spirit of responsibility and solidarity.
