Yasmin Fahimi re-elected as DGB reinforces fight for democracy and fair working conditions

The ETUC warmly congratulates Yasmin Fahimi on her re-election as Chair of the DGB at its congress in Berlin this morning and wishes the whole leadership well.

The DGB plays a vital role in defending workers’ rights, democracy and social justice in Germany and across Europe. Under Yasmin Fahimi’s leadership, the DGB has been a powerful voice against the rise of the far right, standing firmly for solidarity, equality and democratic values. At a time when extremists seek to divide workers by nationality, origin or status, the DGB has consistently defended unity, social cohesion and democratic trade union values as the antidote to hate and division.

The DGB has also shown determined leadership in defending working time protections and opposing attempts to weaken the eight-hour working day. As Yasmin Fahimi told congress delegates, “Finger weg von der 8!” (“Hands off the eight!”), sending a powerful message that resonates throughout Europe: trade unions will not tolerate any attacks on working time.

At a time of growing inequality and political uncertainty, the DGB’s commitment to a strong social Europe, quality jobs and collective bargaining is more important than ever. The DGB is a driving force within the European trade union movement and the ETUC looks forward to keep strengthening its common work with the DGB and Yasmin Fahimi at its helm, to deliver a fairer Europe for working people.
