US military aggression against Venezuela: EU must act to uphold international law

The ETUC expresses its deep concerns about the US  military operations  in Venezuela and condemns such US military intervention in breach of the UN Charter and international law.

The ETUC supports the ITUC and TUCA  and reiterates that workers and citizens must never pay the price of geopolitical escalation. The future of Venezuela must be decided by Venezuelans themselves through democratic and peaceful means, without foreign interference, and with free and independent trade unions able to operate without repression.

The ETUC strongly condemns any attempt by foreign powers to exercise political or economic control over Venezuela in order to secure access to its natural resources. Such actions constitute a grave violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the right of peoples to self-determination, and they inevitably deepen social injustice, repression and violations of workers’ rights.

The ETUC calls for the immediate protection of civilians and all those detained, with full guarantees of due process and transparency. We urge all parties to return to diplomacy and dialogue and reiterate that Latin America must remain a zone of peace.

The European trade union movement stands in solidarity with the workers of Venezuela and their unions, and supports all efforts to protect rights, democracy and peace.

The ETUC calls on the EU to take all action available to it to ensure that all actors engage in inclusive dialogue and mediation in full respect for human rights and international law and in protecting EU citizens.
