Brussels, 27/01/2004 Giving the Jean Monnet lecture in the University of Manchester on January 27, John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), called for pro-Europeans to fight back against the tide of euroscepticism.

Brussels, 13/01/2004 An ETUC delegation comprised of the President, Candido Mendez, General Secretary, John Monks, and the General Secretary of the ICTU, David Begg, will today meet the Taoiseach and put to him the ETUC's positions on key European questions.

Brussels, 12/01/2004 In a letter addressed to the Commissioner Solbes Mira, John Monks, General Secretary of the ETUC, asks the Commissioner not to proceed with plans for legal action against France and Germany for their breach of the terms of the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP).

In a message addressed to the French and the Austrian member organisations, Emilio Gabaglio while expressing solidarity of the ETUC to the actions engaged, stresses that beyond national specificities the question is open throughout Europe and calls for a greater convergence of objectives in the trade-union struggle for the defence of this essential element of the European social model.
