What? / Quoi ? : The DGB is organising gatherings and assemblies in several cities in Germany. One of the major actions will take place in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, at about 3 pm. Individual DGB trade union members - including those in companies - will pass on their messages of solidarity with European workers facing austerity measures. The DGB will collect these messages and present them to Chancellor Merkel on 14 November. The list of the cities where the mobilisations will take place is attached.

UNIA is organizing a trade union rally in Geneva in the bank area as well as a picket in front of the consulates of Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy. UNIA is organizing gatherings in front of Portuguese embassies and consulates in several towns (Bern, Geneva and Zurich). A protest action of the building sector will take place in Zurich, as well as a demonstration in front of the Permanent Representation of the EU in Bern.

Why take this action? The Executive Committee of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) called for a Day of Action and Solidarity, across Europe on 14 November in order to mobilise the European trade union movement behind the ETUC policies set out in the ‘Social compact for Europe’.

With an unemployment rate of 16% and a 3% recession, the country is sinking deeper into the spiral of crisis and the outlook for 2013 is anything but positive.
