Putting just transition into action in Europe and globally: ETUC position towards Qatar COP18

Brussels, 05-06/06/2012 Following the outcome of the 17th set of international climate negotiations held in December 2011 in Durban (COP17), global climate negotiators are currently working on the elements of a future global climate agreement due to be concluded by 2015, and implemented by 2020. The negotiations in Durban managed to save the UN climate process, paving the way for a final round of discussions on three key issues for the union movement:

Resolution on Energy Strategy for Europe 2011-2020

Brussels, 01-02/12/2010 {{Preamble }}This resolution aims at providing a basis for the ETUC and its federations to campaign on energy policy in the next months. This is necessary given the European agenda. The Council on Energy will indeed discuss the European energy strategy 2011-2020 on 3 December 2010. This issue will also be on the agenda of the Heads of States European Council meeting on 4 February 2011 and important strategic decisions will be made in this area in 2011. Therefore, it is crucial for the ETUC to make its concerns and proposals heard.

Brussels, 01-02/06/2010 1. Context The ETUC adopted a resolution in October 2009 on “climate change, new industrial policies and the ways out of the crisis” including strong and ambitious policy recommendations. The ETUC called on the European Union to consider workers and their representatives as crucial players with whom the European Union must engage in a dialogue and negotiate the transition to a low carbon economy that will provide sustainable jobs and social progress.

The climate change, the new industrial policies and the ways out of the crisis

Brussels, 20-21/10/2009 Introduction Weeks before the negotiations in Copenhagen on an international framework on the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, we find ourselves confronted by three mutually-impacting crises: the ecological crisis as a result of climate change and the loss of biodiversity, the global economic crisis and price instability in raw materials and food. From a trade union perspective, this situation presents itself as one of the largest and most difficult challenges of recent decades.

Europe – What now? - Brussels Labour (International Branch of the British Labour Party)

Brussels, 14/10/2009 Thank you for the privilege of inviting me to give the John Fitzmaurice lecture this year. I honour his memory and I follow in distinguished footsteps including those of Neil Kinnock, Margot Wallström and Geoff Hoon to address an old question about where Europe might be heading in the months and years ahead, an old question but one set against a rapidly changing landscape.

  • A low carbon strategy for Britain

A low carbon strategy for Britain

London, 05/06/2009 Thanks for this chance to contribute to today’s conference. At a time of economic and political storms and crisis, it is easy to dismiss or relegate the only slightly longer term challenges that we face. But that is a luxury we cannot afford because of the magnitude and complexity of the environmental challenge. Tackling climate change cannot just be a strategy for Britain. There must be an international and European dimension.

Climate change and the effects on workers

Zaragoza, 11/09/2009 I am very pleased to be able to address this important conference which is held very much on the initiative of the Spanish trade union movement. It shows the determination of the CC.OO and UGT-E to be in the vanguard of those who want to put climate change and sustainable development at the heart of European and Spanish strategy in the years ahead.

Prague, 11/06/2008 To be checked against delivery Hubertus, friends and colleagues. It is always a pleasure to come to the Congress of EMCEF and to this historic city of Prague. Prague is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the famous Prague Spring of 1968, when the flames of freedom and liberty swept through the city and the country, only to be cruelly extinguished shortly afterwards by the forces of repression.
