"Equal Pay Needs Trade Unions" - Sign the pledge!

On 4th of March 2021, the European Commission has presented a proposal for a Gender Pay Transparency Directive.

The ETUC believes that the Directive must be a tool in the hands of women workers to finally have pay transparency and to be able to collectively bargain to eradicate the gender pay gap, pay discrimination and the undervaluation of female-dominated jobs. The proposed Directive however takes a very detrimental approach to this by not guaranteeing that women can chose to be represented by their union, rather than a worker representative, chosen and designated by their employer. Women workers must be empowered to become agents of change and equal pay needs trade unions.

We call on Members of the European Parliament to improve the Directive regarding the right of workers to be represented by their union and to collectively bargain for equal pay.

By signing this pledge, Members of the European Parliament pledge to use their mandate and to put forward amendments to ensure that

  • All workers can join a union and bargain for equal pay and
  • Employers will be required to respect this fundamental right.
