The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) stands in solidarity with the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the entire media community in recognising the journalists who have been killed in Gaza.
These journalists were killed while doing their job, documenting the reality, bearing witness, and ensuring the world hears the voices of those affected. Their courage and commitment to truth came at the highest cost.
Journalism is not a crime. It is a vital cornerstone of democracy and journalists must be protected especially in times of conflict. The deliberate or reckless killing of journalists is a grave violation of international law and an assault on press freedom everywhere.
The ETUC joins EFJ in calling for:
An independent investigation into the deaths of journalists in Gaza.
Accountability for those responsible for attacks on media workers.
Urgent EU action to ensure the safety of journalists in all conflict zones.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families, colleagues and trade unions of those who have lost their lives.
Journalism and trade unionism are bound together by shared values of truth and, justice, both are essential to democratic societies, and both are under attack in too many parts of the world.
At a time when truth is under threat, we stand united with EFJ and IFJ in defending journalism and the right to report without fear.
We call on the EU and all democratic institutions to stand up, not just in words but by taking real measures, to defend journalism, protect those who report from the frontlines.
In solidarity,Esther LynchGeneral Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation
