Trade unions and civil society organisations demand the full respect of trade union rights in El Salvador

Brussels, 25/02/2009

In a letter to the European Commissioners for Trade, Catherine Ashton, and for External relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner on 20 February 2009, trade unions – including the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (CSA/TUCA) – and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – Oxfam, the International Human Rights Federation (FIDH) and the Copenhagen Initiative for Central America and Mexico (CIFCA) – demanded the full respect of the right for association and trade union rights in El Salvador.

They consider the implementation and full respect of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions in relation to trade union rights and the right for association in El Salvador as a non-negotiable condition regarding the relations between the European Union and El Slavador. In particular, they claim that El Salvador should respect, without any further conditions, the following ILO Concventions: Nos. 87, 98, 135 and 151.
