Burma: the time is not yet ripe for total revision of EU sanctions policy

ETUC General Secretary Bernadette Ségol has today written to Baroness Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, saying that while positive change is currently afoot in Burma/Myanmar, the time is not yet ripe for a major revision of policy on sanctions.

Mrs Ségol argued that any future relaxation of restrictive measures must be incremental, matching evidence of real and substantial progress. A document produced by the International Trade Union Confederation appended to the letter sets down “benchmarks” that trade unions insist should be met by the Burmese authorities leading to appropriate responses.
