More worker participation rights and more social inclusion are needed to counter the crisis, says ETUC
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) takes part in a workshop dedicated to socially sustainable anti-crisis measures organised in the margins of the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress in Marseille. Claudia Menne, ETUC Confederal Secretary, will emphasise more social inclusion and more worker participation rights to counter the crisis and speak in favour of sustainable growth.
For the ETUC, the current crisis is being used to undermine the European social model, to cut social welfare measures such as pensions and to put an end to workers’ and trade union rights. Austerity will not pave the way out of the crisis. On the contrary, unemployment and deeper inequalities are growing. If European integration continues to be perceived as damaging to Social Europe, the risk of an anti European backlash could pose a real threat,
“Europe needs solidarity and social progress, two essential values which must drive any action intended to stimulate sustainable and inclusive growth. We have never stood in such dire need of this” said Claudia Menne.
