Message from the ETUC to the European Summit on the 23 October: no more austerity and attacks on social rights
The European trade unions, affiliated to the European Trade Union Confederation, ETUC, met in Brussels on 19 and 20 October. They sent an urgent message to the European Council to be held on 23 October. The medicine is worse than the cure and the deterioration of the economic situation in certain countries shows the total failure of the shock treatment.
Everyone recognises the gravity of the situation and the crucial nature of the European Summit coming up on 23 October. Citizens and workers are reaching the end of their tether. Urgent measures commensurate with the situation need to be taken.
Bernadette Ségol, ETUC General Secretary, stated: “The financial sector is at the origin of the crisis. Citizens are paying for it. They are the ones creating growth and paying taxes. They are the ones rescuing the euro and the banks. Instead of recognising the value of their efforts, their rights are under attack. Workers expect European leaders and institutions to act for more democracy to support and not undermine social Europe, trade union and labour rights, including collective bargaining.”
A letter accompanied by the Statement adopted by the European trade unions has been sent to the leaders of the European institutions and the Heads of State and of Government of the Member States.
