ETUC welcomes disarmament proposals by Greek and Turkish Trade Unions
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) welcomes the joint statement of its Turkish affiliates DISK, TURK-IS, HAK-IS and KESK in support of the proposal endorsed at the recent Congress of its Greek affiliate, GSEE, for the trade union Movements in both countries to work together in promoting cuts in military expenditure.
ETUC General Secretary John Monks said: “Greece and Turkey are among the highest spending countries on armaments in Europe and the world. Trade unions in both countries have long worked to promote peace and solidarity and recognise the need, now urgent, to redirect public expenditure to deal with the current economic crisis and create decent jobs. I hope that their respective governments will respond swiftly and positively to their call”.
