ETUC concerned about the Commission’s inaction on the protection of fundamental social rights
The European Commission issued its response to the European Parliament report on challenges to collective agreements in the European Union. In this report, which was adopted with a wide majority, MEPs called for legislative action in response to recent rulings by the European Court of Justice (EJC). The Commission is now rejecting this call, relying on the European Social Partners willingness to carry out an analysis of the consequences of the EJC rulings.
Said John Monks: ‘I am very concerned about this communication. ETUC is ready to discuss issues of labour mobility, including legal aspects with the social partners, but has insisted that this is not an excuse for inaction by the Commission. If the Commission thinks that they can wash their hands of the issue they are completely wrong. It is urgent and today I call on them to think again. ETUC regards this issue as a central test for this and a future Commission.’
