John Monks and a Luxembourg trade union delegation hand over the ETUC social claims to Jean-Claude Juncker

Today John Monks, together with a Luxembourg trade union delegation (Mr Reding, CGT-L President, Mr Clément, CGT-L General Secretary, Mr Weber, LCGB President, Mrs Goergen, LCGB Deputy General Secretary) met Jean-Claude Juncker, President in office of the European Union, in order to hand over the ETUC Memorandum, which includes the ten ETUC social claims of the trade union movement.

The Luxembourg Minister of Labour, Mr Biltgen, was also present. Discussions also focused on European issues of current concern: the review of the Lisbon Strategy, the Directive on Working Time and the Bolkestein Directive. Mr Monks recalled that the ETUC was closely following the direction these dossiers would take in order to prevent the social field from losing out. He added that Social Europe and sustainable development should be placed at the heart of the Lisbon Strategy to ensure the support of citizens for European construction.
