ETUC condemns the assassination of three trade union leaders in Honduras
The Deputy General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Maria Helena André, has written to the Honduran ambassador in Brussels to express the ETUC’s horror at the killing of Rosa Altagracia Fuentes, General Secretary of the Honduran Workers’ Confederation (Confédération des Travailleurs de Honduras - CTH) and her two colleagues Virginia Sánchez and Juan Bautista Gálvez on the night of 23 April.
According to the police, trade union leader Rosa Altagracia Fuentes was hit by 16 shots, showing that the killing was brutally premeditated. The ETUC has expressed its solidarity to the coordinating body of Central American and Caribbean trade unions (CSACC), to which the CTH is affiliated, and its support for investigations to solve this triple murder.
The ETUC has also called on the European Commission to demand that central American governments, with which the European Union is currently negotiating an association agreement, adopt urgent measures to guarantee trade union freedoms throughout the region. As highlighted and condemned by the declaration of the 4th EU-LAC Trade Union Summit held recently in Lima, assassinations of trade union activists are very frequent in the region, whether in Guatemala or other countries.
