The President of the Federation of Indipendent Trade Unions of Russia (FNPR), Michael Shmakov and the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), John Monks call upon the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir V. Putin and the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, to give a social dimension to the EU- Russia relationship.

In a joint letter, the FNPR and the ETUC made a concrete proposal for a social dimension to become a constitutive element of the EU-Russia relationship and they have demanded more recognition to be extended to the Trade Union organisation they represent.

The ETUC and FNPR believe that a real Social Dialogue would make a positive contribution to the development of the EU - Russia relationship.
