The European Trade Union Confederation calls on the candidates for the European Parliamentary elections to commit themselves to social Europe
The European elections on 13 June represent a major test for the future of Europe in general, and Social Europe in particular. For the first time, electors in 25 countries will come to the ballot box, and their votes should redirect the political agenda towards the strong European social dimension that the trade union movement has been demanding. In an open letter to the European Parliamentary candidates, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) calls for greater social justice and a better quality of life for all.
Following the recent enlargement, the European Union finds itself at a crossroads. This is why the forthcoming European elections are particularly important for the future.
The ETUC strongly urges European citizens to vote in the elections for a candidate who will make a difference - a candidate committed to Social Europe. A European Parliament with a majority of members (MEPs) who understand the needs and interests of workers would certainly contribute to building this Europe.
As more and more decisions are taken at Community level, and the European Parliament’s role in the decision-making process is growing, it is essential for people to express their views on the Europe in which they live.
The European trade union movement has been working for years to defend the rights of workers, and for this reason it attributes special importance to the forthcoming appointment at the ballot box.
The ETUC will send an open letter to all the candidates in these elections to put forward its demands on questions of economic and social policy (see attached letter). The confederation calls on all candidates to support the following aims:
Stronger workers’ rights;
Full employment and sustainable growth;
More and better jobs;
A Constitutional Treaty with a stronger social dimension;for all;
Long-term social protection;
Sustainable development and a healthy environment;
The adequate supply of services of general interest
Free movement, immigration and social inclusion;
The strengthening of cross-border trade union organisation.
The ETUC strongly urges the new candidates to support these fundamental rights and to be bold in taking action to bring about sustainable growth that will benefit the whole of society.
On 20 July, the confederation will organise a reception in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, in order to meet the newly elected MEPs.
