The ETUC calls on EU leaders not to cave in to UK pressure to further weaken the Charter of Fundamental Rights

“A European Constitution which is meaningless on fundamental rights is a Constitution not worth having”.

The ETUC is calling on EU heads of State and government meeting today not to cave in the face of UK pressure to further weaken the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

John Monks, General Secretary of the ETUC, said".

The UK Government has created a new ‘red line’ in the past two weeks, since the decision to hold a UK referendum.“

They are demonising the Charter of Fundamental Rights as a strikers’ charter and insisting that it be rendered meaningless.“

This is a highly exaggerated and misleading picture of the Charter which is already less effective than many of us would like it to be.“

Other national leaders should reject this pressure.”
