ETUC condemns the expropriation of Albanian trade unions

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is deeply concerned following the expropriation of Albanian Trade Unions from their offices, and condemns the destruction by the authorities of union property and documentation, preventing union organisations from functioning.

ETUC General Secretary John Monks declared: “We are deeply concerned at the latest developments concerning the premises of KSSH (Confederation of Trade Unions) and BSPSH (United Independent Albanian Trade Unions), members of the ETUC Balkans Trade Union Forum, which yesterday were raided by the court executive office and police. This situation puts at risk the development of labour relations and social dialogue in the country towards EU values and standards. In the perspective of Albania’s possible EU candidacy, we asked Olli Rehn, the European Commissioner responsible for Enlargement, to make sure that Albania fulfills all requirements in terms of EU social and civil rights. I have also written to the Albanian President and Prime Minister calling on them to move towards negotiated rather than coercive actions”.
