The ETUC supports the French trade unions in their struggle against the ’First Employment Contract’

John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), affirmed the support of the whole European trade union movement for the campaign of action being carried out by the French unions in opposition to the new ’contrat de premier embauche’ (CPE) - the first employment contract - in France.

The introduction of insecure employment and the attack on existing workers’ rights, in this case in France but also taking place in a number of other European countries, is not the right way to relaunch growth, boost European competitiveness and create jobs.

On the contrary, these kinds of measures create a situation of social dumping in the EU, which will damage the future of Europe.

A unique characteristic of the European Social Model,” declared John Monks, “lies in its commitment to consultation with the social partners. In the French case, exactly the opposite has happened: there have been no negotiations.

Reforms that promote greater mobility at work must be coupled with better security for workers. That can only be guaranteed through strong social relations and governments that respect the social partners.
