European action for trade justice

On November the 21st and 22nd, EU Trade Ministers will meet to finalise the EU’s negotiating position for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks in December.

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) will join forces with NGOs, the ICFTU and Belgian trade unions to organise a symbolic action to call for “ Trade justice - not free trade ”.

The main purpose of the action is to show that the citizens of Europe are concerned with the questions of international trade, and anxious for negotiations at the WTO to contribute to social justice.

The action is part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP)

What will happen?
The action will take place on Monday 21 November 2005, between 11.00 am and 12.30 pm.

11 am - General gathering of all the demonstrators in front of the European Council (Justus Lipsius building- 175, rue de la Loi, 1048 Brussels).

Speeches by representatives of trade unions (John Monks, ETUC), and NGOs.

12.30 - End of the action

In the afternoon, Mr Hilary Benn, UK Secretary of State for International Development and Mr. Ian Pearson, UK Minister of State for Trade, received a delegation from ETUC and NGOs who presented the main political message of the coalition.
