The trade union view: what is at stake ?

The European Trade Union Confederation, together with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the NGO group Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) is demanding a deal that guarantees “Trade Justice, Not Free Trade”.

The WTO must listen to the voices of 30 million people worldwide who have taken action in 2005 to bring an end to global poverty.

The ETUC is calling on EU Trade Ministers to:
-  Respect poor countries’ right to decide on trade policies that will help them end poverty, respect workers’ rights and protect their environment;
-  Stop pushing developing countries to open up their economies to free trade;
-  Allow developing countries and poor people to protect their public services;
-  End dumping of rich country products on poor country markets.

It is time for the WTO to put the interests of people and the environment first, and to show they are serious about putting an end to poverty.
