In the wake of the Hampton Court European Summit, the ETUC calls for a determined social and economic programme

After yesterday’s informal Summit of European Union leaders at Hampton Court, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is pressing for a new agenda for social Europe.

Commenting on the Hampton Court Summit, John Monks, General Secretary of the ETUC, said: “The most important question is what happens next. The Summit approved the paper prepared by the President of the European Commission (‘European Values in the Globalised World’), including the idea of a globalisation adjustment fund. That was welcome. But what was lacking was an agreed strategy to boost demand and economic growth. This central issue - crucial for more and better jobs - was largely absent, while there was much talk about greater flexibility in welfare and employment standards. The ETUC is pressing for a new agenda for social Europe, covering restructuring, demographic change, migration, equality, learning, and outstanding items such as the Services Directive. But that agenda by itself will not resolve the jobs problem. To tackle this, we need determined, common and coordinated economic policies.”
