ETUC Executive Committee to set out proposals for a ‘Strong and Social Europe’
In preparation for the informal summit of EU leaders on 27 October, called by the UK Presidency to examine the future of the European Social Model, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Executive Committee, meeting in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday (19-20 October), will put forward its own programme for ‘Shaping a Strong and Social Europe’.
The ETUC is taking a strong lead in support of a single European Social Model, based on common values of solidarity, equality, social justice and internationalism, and rejects the current view among some European leaders that the EU is no more than a collection of different national models. Said ETUC General Secretary John Monks: “The concept of Social Europe has been central to the development of the European Union. Social rights, social inclusion, social dialogue, and an important role for the social partners have been recognised as key elements of Europe and are among the EU’s core values. But now the future of Europe and the European Social Model is in question. The ETUC urges European leaders, at their meeting, to launch a new strategy for listening to people and their concerns.”
Also on the Executive Committee agenda will be preparations for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ministerial conference in Hong Kong in December, and action by the social partners to combat violence at work.
