ETUC pledges “full support” to Tunisian workers
Bernadette Ségol, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) today met Hassine Abassi, General Secretary of the Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT), who described current developments in Tunisia and in particular the key role played by the trade union centre in helping to resolve the political, economic, social and security problems in the country.
Bernadette Ségol said: “The UGTT has consistently played a central role in Tunisia’s development, from independence onwards, and it is once more showing the way. The ETUC will do all it can to assist the UGTT in its historic efforts to achieve peace and stability in the country. The negotiation of a roadmap bringing together disparate political and non-governmental movements is a tremendous achievement. It must now be put into effect quickly so that Tunisia can begin a new start on a more equitable basis. I would also want to express my admiration for Hassine personally for the leadership he is showing in this extremely difficult and indeed dangerous situation.”
