Colombia: ETUC’s deep concern on imprisonment of trade union leader, Hubert de Jesús Ballesteros Gomez
Today, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) wrote to Ms Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, to express its deep concern on the recent imprisonment of the Colombian trade union leader, Hubert de Jesús Ballesteros Gomez. The ETUC urges the European Union to do everything possible to ensure the release of Mr Ballesteros and to obtain guarantees from the Colombian authorities, ensuring the democratic right to freedom of expression for all trade unionists and social activists.
The ETUC is deeply concerned that despite that guarantees given by Colombia to respect trade union rights, notably in the context of the Free Trade Agreement with the EU, a prominent trade union leader could be arrested in what appears to be an attempt to intimidate the organisations involved in the national strikes.
