
Financial perspective 2006-2013: ETUC demands an increase in the community Budget in order to strengthen the European Social model
In response to the draft report by the European Parliament’s Temporary Committee on Policy Challenges and Budgetary Means of the enlarged Union 2007-2013, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is concerned at the inadequate proposals related to the European budget and demands an increase to ensure that social policy is protected and commitments made by the European Union are respected.
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) does not believe that the European Commission has proposed sufficient resources to fulfil the ambitions of the EU Member States as regards the objectives of enlargement and the Lisbon and The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) does not believe that the European Commission has proposed enough resources to fulfil the ambitions of the EU Member States as regards the objectives of enlargement and the Lisbon and Göteborg strategies.
Greater effort must be made to stimulate growth, employment, competitiveness and sustainable development. If the EU is to achieve these objectives, it must provide financial resources consistent with its ambitions.
Moreover, ETUC is particularly concerned by the draft report issued by the European Parliament’s Temporary Committee on Policy Challenges and Budgetary Means of the enlarged Union 2007-2013. This report only addresses tenuously issues related to social policy, in particular the implementation of the social agenda. This approach runs counter to both the Commission’s proposals and the conclusions of the recent European Council in Brussels on the relaunch of the Lisbon Strategy.
Social policy is one of the pillars of the European Union and must therefore be provided with sufficient financial resources to maintain and strengthen the European social model.
