ETUC: Turkish Government must end repression, intimidation and violations of human rights

Replying to a letter from Faruk Celik, Turkish Minister of Labour and Social Security, seeking to excuse recent events, Bernadette Ségol, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) reiterated her deep concerns at the totally disproportionate use of force by the police during the events in Istanbul in early June and the continuing violation of human rights and attacks on some trade unions and professional associations. She also pointed out that new national labour law is still in breach of several ILO and EU standards.

“We supported the accession of Turkey to the EU, but are extremely concerned about the increasing intimidation and repression of the opposition and of some trade unions. We condemn the ongoing breaches of fundamental human rights and call on the Turkish Government to respect ILO core labour standards as well as the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights” said Bernadette Ségol.
