Croatia: 28th Member of the European Union

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) welcomes Croatia’s accession to the European Union on 1 July 2013. At the same time, it draws attention to the need for further progress, particularly in strengthening social dialogue.

The ETUC reminds the Croatian Government of the importance of involving the social partners at an early stage during the public consultations process. It regrets that the Government did not follow that approach in relation to the Law recently adopted on relations between the Parliament and the Government in EU affairs. It calls for a commitment on its part to ensure genuine and substantive social dialogue. The ETUC also reiterates its principled support for free movement of EU workers.

Bernadette Ségol, ETUC General Secretary, said “Croatian workers, through their unions, have been integrated in the European trade union Movement for several years. I am very pleased that they are also now co-citizens. They should benefit from all the rights we aspire-to within our European social model.”
