The ETUC deplores austerity budget

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) deplores the Budget agreement just adopted by the European Council. It is a bad signal for the European Union.

Said Bernadette Ségol, ETUC General Secretary: “The reached agreement would cap the EU budget at €960bn and the payment ceiling would be limited to €908bn over the 7 coming years. Should these figures be exact, that would represent a decrease of around 3 percent for the period 2014 – 2020 over the past seven years. It is the first decreasing pluriannual budget of the European Union. We know that cohesion will be affected and in particular the European Social Fund. The ETUC will examine the cuts in more detail and will react accordingly”.
