ETUC announces the merger of its three Institutes, ETUI, ETUCO and TUTB, into the European Trade Union Institute for Research, Education and Health and Safety

The ETUC’s research institute ETUI, its education college ETUCO, and its health and safety technical bureau TUTB today become one organisation with three departments. This will bring together a wealth of expertise and experience from a complement of 60 staff members.

Commenting on the launch, John Monks, General Secretary of the ETUC, said: “Our vision is for the newly created ETUI-REHS to become the single best and most respected European knowledge and competence centre in relation to the world of labour. The European Commission recognises this potential, in providing such strong support for the centre.”

Marc Sapir, Managing Director of the new centre, said: “The new Institute will provide the kind of research, expertise and support needed by decision-makers to maintain the impetus for Social Europe. It will promote international solidarity, justice, prosperity and welfare, including, crucially, giving protection to workers both in the EU Member States and in the countries preparing to join.”

Specifically, the centre will bring together professional economic and social research expertise, engineering and ergonomic knowledge and training activities that can make the international non-profit making association a real asset for the EU as a whole. “There are many overlaps between these areas of knowledge which, when united in one organisation, will bring a real value-added to the work of our movement,” said John Monks.
