ETUC General Secretary together with Spanish people against austerity

Bernadette Ségol, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) was yesterday in Madrid to underline the European trade union movement’s support to Spanish workers and citizens demonstrating against the harshest budgetary cuts in Spain’s democratic history.

About 800.000 people followed the call of trade unions and several civil society organisations to protest against the government’s latest austerity measures. Speaking at the press conference before the demonstration, Bernadette Ségol said: “The government’s measures are unfair and useless they will not provide any solution to the crisis. These budgetary cuts, which have also strongly hit Italy, Portugal, Greece and Ireland, are merely ideological and are undermining social cohesion. The ETUC will continue to stand together with the people which are affected hard by austerity measures. The Spanish organisations have planned other mobilisations in August and September. We will be there again to support them”.
